From construction to urban design, the world has witnessed a series of mishaps in which pedestrians and other road users have been struck by trains.

While the number of people killed in such accidents has steadily declined over the past few decades, the nature of the accidents remains a concern.

While many of the incidents involve trains hitting people, there are also more recent examples of pedestrian fatalities that occurred during construction.

Here are 10 of the worst accidents that occurred in the past 20 years: 1.

Amtrak train struck a pedestrian at a construction site in North Carolina, killing him and injuring two others Source: ABC News article A man who was standing in a construction area of a North Carolina state university was struck and killed by a freight train.

His body was found later that day near a railroad track in Wapello, North Carolina.

The train had been scheduled to cross the track to go northbound on Interstate 24.

Authorities say the man was walking on the railroad tracks with a friend when the train stopped at a crossing to cross a railroad embankment.

The man died at the scene.

The two others who were walking with him, one who was also injured and one who had fallen from the train, were taken to a hospital.

They were not seriously hurt.

A second person who was not injured was taken to an area hospital.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the accident.

A truck carrying gas exploded near a construction project in Georgia, killing three people and injuring three others Source : ABC News report The explosion happened in a gas tank near a gas station at a Georgia gas station.

Two people were injured and three others were hospitalized.

Three people died and three were injured in the accident, according to police.

Three others were arrested in connection with the incident.

The police chief said investigators believe the explosion was triggered by a faulty valve on the truck.

The people who were on the crane were taken away from the scene by police.

The accident happened near a water main and a railroad tunnel.

A police officer and the driver of the excavator who were working on the rail crossing suffered minor injuries.

The building, located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, housed a construction firm.

A group of people were at the home when the fire broke outside.

A woman died when a building collapsed at a high-rise apartment building in Texas, killing at least eight people Source : AP news source The death of a woman at a hotel in Houston on Saturday night left at least 18 people injured and 10 dead, authorities said.

The hotel was in the town of Fort Worth, Texas.

The woman, who was identified as 32-year-old Jennifer Lacey, died at an area medical center after the building collapsed.
